Current wars between countries — like the Russia-Ukraine conflict — are being fought not only on land, but in cyberspace, says Mikhail Gofman, Cal State Fullerton associate professor of computer science. While ensuring virtual protection against war enemies is an extreme use of ethical hacking, applications exist in less threatening situations as well.

CSUF’s very own cybersecurity organization, the Offensive Security Society (OSS), often competes in competitions such as the Collegiate Pentesting Competition (CPTC) to represent the university. CPTC is the world’s premier cybersecurity competition designed for college students. The competition revolves around ethically hacking a simulated professional company and then evaluates the red teams (hacking teams) in communication, hacking skills, and report writing.

It has been said that the best defense is a good offense. So, although many cybersecurity experts and firms go to great lengths to defend themselves from attack, the idea of “offensive security” has become an important component in computer science. On Jan. 7-10, a squad of Cal State Fullerton students had a chance to test its offensive capabilities by competing in the National Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition.
