Current wars between countries — like the Russia-Ukraine conflict — are being fought not only on land, but in cyberspace, says Mikhail Gofman, Cal State Fullerton associate professor of computer science. While ensuring virtual protection against war enemies is an extreme use of ethical hacking, applications exist in less threatening situations as well.

CSUF OFFENSIVE SECURITY SOCIETY (OSS) PLACES 3RD IN CPTC COMPETITION

CSUF’s very own cybersecurity organization, the Offensive Security Society (OSS), often competes in competitions such as the Collegiate Pentesting Competition (CPTC) to represent the university. CPTC is the world’s premier cybersecurity competition designed for college students. The competition revolves around ethically hacking a simulated professional company and then evaluates the red teams (hacking teams) in communication, hacking skills, and report writing.

OSS PLACES SECOND IN THE CPTC NATIONALS

Congrats to the Offensive Security Society (OSS) student team, which has placed second at the Collegiate Penetration Competition (CPTC) Nationals held at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The win speaks to the enduring efforts of the following computer science students, who invested substantial time and have displayed incredible grit throughout the competition, under the supervision of their faculty advisor and computer science associate professor, Dr. Mikhail Gofman.

CSUF CYBERSECURITY STUDENTS TEST THEIR 'ETHICAL HACKING' ABILITIES

It has been said that the best defense is a good offense. So, although many cybersecurity experts and firms go to great lengths to defend themselves from attack, the idea of “offensive security” has become an important component in computer science. On Jan. 7-10, a squad of Cal State Fullerton students had a chance to test its offensive capabilities by competing in the National Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition.
